ASVAB Auto and Shop Information Study Guide

Auto and Shop Information is the ASVAB’s hands-on knowledge section. It rewards people who have turned a wrench, changed their own oil, or spent time in a wood shop, and it intimidates people who have not. The good news is that the content is concrete, finite, and very learnable in a few weeks. This guide covers what the subtests measure, where the scores count, the topics you will see, and a study approach that works even if you have never opened a hood.

What Auto and Shop Information Measures

This section measures practical knowledge of automotive systems and shop practices. The automotive side tests whether you understand how a vehicle’s major systems work and what common maintenance and repair terms mean. The shop side tests whether you can identify tools, know what each one is for, and understand basic materials and fastening methods. There is essentially no math. Nearly every question is recall or recognition: what does this part do, which tool fits this job, what causes this symptom.

On the CAT-ASVAB, the computerized test used at MEPS, Auto Information (AI) and Shop Information (SI) are actually two separate short subtests. Their results are combined into a single Auto and Shop (AS) score that appears on your score report and feeds job qualification composites. The paper version combines them into one subtest from the start.

Where Auto and Shop Counts

Auto and Shop does not feed the AFQT, the enlistment eligibility score built from the four verbal and math subtests. Instead, AS feeds the mechanical and technical line score composites that each branch uses to qualify applicants for specific jobs. The exact composite formulas vary by branch, but mechanical maintenance composites typically lean heavily on AS. Wheeled vehicle mechanics, aircraft maintainers, machinists, and construction equipment repairers are the kinds of specialties gated behind these composites.

Keep the right frame as you study: the ASVAB is not pass or fail. A weak AS score will not keep you out of the military, but a strong one qualifies you for mechanical career fields that also happen to translate into excellent civilian trades. Question Count and Time Limit

On the CAT-ASVAB, Auto Information has about 10 questions with a time limit of about 7 minutes, and Shop Information has about 10 questions with about 6 minutes. That is roughly 40 seconds per question, which is plenty for recall questions. Some sessions include unscored tryout questions that stretch these numbers slightly, so treat them as close estimates.

  • Engine fundamentals. The four stroke cycle, cylinders, pistons, valves, and what common engine components do.

The shop questions center on tools and fastening:

  • Power tools. Drills, grinders, sanders, and saws, including which tool suits which material and task.
  • Measuring and layout tools. Micrometers, calipers, squares, levels, and gauges used to measure and mark work accurately.
  • Fasteners. Bolts, screws, nuts, rivets, and welds, plus thread types and when each fastening method is appropriate.

How to Study for Auto and Shop

Study systems, not trivia. For the automotive half, learn each major system as a short story: fuel and air enter the engine, combustion pushes pistons, the crankshaft turns, the transmission adjusts the power, and the drivetrain delivers it to the wheels. Meanwhile the cooling system carries heat away, the lubrication system reduces friction, and the electrical system starts the engine and keeps it running. When you understand the story, symptom questions become logic questions instead of memory questions.

For the shop half, build a visual vocabulary. Look at labeled pictures of tools and quiz yourself on name and purpose. If you can, spend an afternoon in a garage or workshop handling real tools. Ten minutes with a micrometer teaches more than an hour reading about one. Watching short repair videos is a solid substitute if you have no shop access.

Then drill practice questions daily in short sessions. Because the question pool draws on a limited set of facts, repeated exposure closes gaps quickly. Keep a running list of every part or tool you miss and review the list before each session.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming experience is enough. People who work on cars still miss questions about systems they have never touched, like differentials or drum brakes. Cover the full topic list.
  • Ignoring the shop half. Shop Information is nearly half the combined score and is the easier half to improve, because tool identification is pure memorization.
  • Memorizing names without functions. Questions usually ask what a part does or which tool does a job, not just what something is called.
  • Confusing similar components. Alternator versus starter, thermostat versus water pump, caliper versus micrometer. Make direct comparison flashcards for pairs you mix up.
  • Rushing the short timer. Six or seven minutes sounds tight, but it is about 40 seconds per question. Read every option before answering.

Worked Example: Diagnosing an Overheating Engine

Here is an original example of the reasoning this section rewards. Suppose a question says an engine overheats within minutes of a cold start, and the upper radiator hose stays cool while the engine temperature climbs. Which component is the most likely cause?

Walk the cooling story. Coolant should circulate from the engine through the upper hose into the radiator, shed its heat, and return. A cool upper hose while the engine runs hot means hot coolant is not reaching the radiator at all, so circulation is blocked. The thermostat is a valve that stays closed on a cold engine and opens as coolant warms up. If it sticks closed, coolant stays trapped in the engine, the engine overheats fast, and the radiator and its upper hose stay cool, which matches the symptoms exactly. A bad radiator fan would not fit, because a fan problem shows up at idle after the radiator has already received hot coolant, meaning the hose would be hot. Low coolant would not explain a completely cool hose within minutes either. The stuck thermostat is the answer, and the symptom pattern, not memorized trivia, is what gets you there.
