ASVAB Line Scores and Military Jobs: How Your Scores Map to Careers
Your AFQT score decides whether you can enlist. Your line scores decide what you will actually do once you are in. This second set of numbers gets far less attention from applicants, yet it is the one that determines whether you spend your enlistment working on aircraft electronics, running a medical clinic, or doing a job you never wanted. Here is how line scores work, how each branch builds them, and how to use that knowledge to aim your preparation.
What Line Scores Are
The ASVAB has nine subtests: General Science, Arithmetic Reasoning, Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Mathematics Knowledge, Electronics Information, Auto and Shop Information, Mechanical Comprehension, and Assembling Objects. Only four of them (Arithmetic Reasoning, Mathematics Knowledge, Word Knowledge, and Paragraph Comprehension) feed the AFQT percentile that governs enlistment eligibility.
Line scores, also called composite scores, are combinations of subtest scores that each branch assembles differently to predict success in particular career fields. A job that involves electronics repair draws on your electronics, math, and science subtests. A clerical or administrative job leans on verbal and math skills. Every enlisted job in every branch has one or more composite minimums attached to it, and you must meet them to be offered that job.
Standard Scores: The Raw Material of Every Composite
Line scores are built from subtest standard scores, not from your AFQT percentile. Each subtest is scaled so that 50 is the average and roughly two thirds of test takers score between 40 and 60. When a branch computes a composite, it adds the standard scores from the relevant subtests, sometimes with additional scaling. This has a practical consequence: your AFQT can look fine while a single weak subtest quietly disqualifies you from the field you want. An applicant with a 70 AFQT but a poor Electronics Information score may be locked out of avionics jobs that another applicant with a 55 AFQT and strong technical scores qualifies for easily. When you review a practice test, look at every subtest, not just the headline number.
Army Line Scores
The Army computes ten composites and attaches at least one to every Military Occupational Specialty (MOS).

The GT score deserves special attention. It is built from Verbal Expression and Arithmetic Reasoning, and a GT of 110 or higher is a common gateway requirement for the Army’s most selective enlisted paths, including special operations programs and many intelligence jobs. Air Force MAGE Scores
The Air Force groups every enlisted specialty under four composites known together as MAGE:
- Mechanical (M): built from mechanical, science, and auto and shop subtests; used for aircraft maintenance and vehicle fields.
- Administrative (A): built from the verbal subtests and math; used for personnel, logistics planning, and office career fields.
- General (G): built from Verbal Expression and Arithmetic Reasoning; used for a wide range of jobs including security forces, air traffic control, and cyber fields.
- Electronics (E): built from math, electronics, and science subtests; used for avionics, missile maintenance, and communications systems.
Each Air Force Specialty Code lists a minimum in one or more MAGE areas. Because the Air Force and Space Force also carry the highest AFQT entry minimums at 36, competitive applicants usually aim well above the floors across the board.
Navy and Coast Guard: Direct Subtest Combinations
The Navy takes a different approach. Instead of a fixed menu of named composites, each Navy rating lists its own formula built directly from subtest scores. A few illustrative patterns:
- Hospital Corpsman draws on verbal, math, and science subtests.
- Nuclear field ratings combine heavy math with science and verbal scores and carry some of the highest cutoffs in any branch.
- Aviation maintenance ratings mix mechanical, electronics, and math subtests.
The Coast Guard works similarly, publishing subtest combination minimums for each rating, and also uses a general technical style combination for many of them. In both sea services, a strong showing in math and science subtests unlocks the most technical, and often most marketable, ratings.
Marine Corps Composites
The Marine Corps uses a compact set of composites, including Mechanical Maintenance (MM), General Technical (GT), Clerical (CL), and Electronics (EL). Each MOS field lists a minimum in the relevant composite. As in the Army, the Marine GT score functions as a broad gatekeeper: many intelligence, communications, and special duty assignments require a strong GT. Because the Marine Corps assigns many recruits to a broad program field rather than a guaranteed specific job, strong composites across the board matter even more; they determine which fields your contract can include and how you compare when specific school seats are handed out.
Important Caveats About Cutoffs
Specific numeric cutoffs for individual jobs change more often than most websites update. Branches revise composite formulas, retitle jobs, and adjust minimums with force needs. Treat any list of exact job cutoffs you find online, including branch fan sites, as a starting point rather than a promise. The current requirements live with the service classifiers at MEPS, and your recruiter can pull them for any job you are considering. Two other realities worth knowing: meeting a minimum makes you eligible, not guaranteed, since jobs also depend on openings, physical standards, and security clearance eligibility; and higher scores give you leverage when negotiating your contract.
How to Prepare With a Job in Mind
Work backward from the career you want. First, identify the composite or subtest combination your target job uses. Then weight your study plan toward those subtests while keeping the four AFQT subtests sharp, since they appear in most composites anyway. A few examples of how that plays out:
- Aiming for a mechanical field? Add focused review of engines, tools, gears, and simple machines on top of your math work.
- Aiming for electronics or nuclear work? Push algebra hard and study circuits, current, and electrical components.
- Aiming for medical, intelligence, or administrative fields? Vocabulary, reading, and science review pay the biggest dividends.
