- Practice without a calculator. You do not get one on the ASVAB. Rebuild your pencil and paper arithmetic, especially long division and fraction operations, so computation never becomes the bottleneck.
- Write down what the question asks before solving. Many AR problems bury the actual question in the last clause. Underline it mentally, then work toward exactly that quantity.
- Estimate before you compute. A rough answer catches setup errors. If you estimate around 60 and your computation says 6, you inverted a ratio somewhere.
One more technique deserves its own mention: backsolving. Because every AR question is multiple choice, you can sometimes test the answer choices against the story instead of building an equation. If a problem asks how many tickets were sold and the choices are 20, 30, 40, and 50, try the middle values in the conditions of the problem and see which one makes the story balance. Backsolving is slower than a clean setup when you know the setup, but it rescues points on problems where the algebra will not come to you, and the generous AR time limit makes it affordable.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Answering the wrong question. Wrong answer choices are often correct answers to a different question, like the discount amount when the question asked for the final price. Reread the final sentence before you commit.
- Taking percentages of the wrong base. A 20 percent discount followed by 8 percent tax applies the tax to the discounted price, not the original.
- Mixing units. Minutes versus hours and ounces versus pounds sink otherwise correct setups. Convert everything to one unit before computing.
- Adding times in work problems. If one worker needs 4 hours and another needs 6, together they do not need 10 hours. Add their rates, not their times.
- Rushing because the math looks easy. The arithmetic is simple, so people skim the setup. On the CAT-ASVAB you cannot return to a question, so one careful pass beats a fast sloppy one.
Worked Example Walkthrough
Here is an original example. A jacket is priced at 80 dollars. The store discounts it by 25 percent, then adds 5 percent sales tax to the discounted price. What is the final cost?
Step one, apply the discount. Twenty five percent of 80 is 20, so the discounted price is 80 minus 20, which is 60 dollars. A shortcut gets you there faster: paying after a 25 percent discount means paying 75 percent, and 0.75 times 80 is 60. Step two, apply the tax to the discounted price. Five percent of 60 is 3, so the final cost is 60 plus 3, which is 63 dollars. The most tempting wrong answer is the one you get by taxing the original 80 dollars first or by taking both percentages of 80. Working the steps in order, each on the correct base, gives 63 dollars.
That two step structure, where the output of the first operation becomes the base for the second, is the single most common trap pattern in AR. Train yourself to ask after every step: what number does the next percentage apply to?
